The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the biggest challenges the world has faced in recent times. It impacted all sectors globally, with the education sector being among the hardest hit.

The pandemic and lockdowns significantly affected all areas of education in Kerala, leaving thousands of institutions and millions of students in distress.
Solution:
Kerala addressed COVID-19 with online education. Along with the “Stay at Home” concept, “Study at Home” became a new approach that sustained the disrupted education sector. Through mobile devices and internet access, millions of students could study safely from home as part of online learning. Although there were initial technical difficulties, these were resolved over time, allowing classes to proceed smoothly.
Applications like G Suite, Google Meet, Zoom, and WhatsApp were primarily used for education, with live and recorded classes offered to students. Live classes allowed for real-time interaction between teachers and students, including instant clarification of doubts, similar to traditional classroom settings. Recorded classes enabled students to review content at their convenience for better understanding. This initiative supported the education sector until offline classes could resume, playing a crucial role in helping students and teachers continue learning safely from home.
Proper Preparations
As in a typical academic year, online classes in Kerala began in June, with the Education Department preparing in advance. A program called “First Bell” was created to guide universities and educational institutions, providing:
- Clear guidelines for operations
- Technical preparations for smooth execution
- KITE VICTERS TV channel, mobile apps, websites, and social media platforms for delivering classes to students
- Training for teachers
- Scheduling for classes
- Solutions for related challenges
These preparations facilitated the seamless continuation of online education.
A Shift in the Education System:
For many students, online education was initially unfamiliar compared to traditional methods. Over time, they adapted and gained a better understanding of online learning. The concept of using mobile devices as classrooms and studying anywhere was a new realization for both students and parents. This awareness of the potential of online education opened new opportunities for the future.
Major Challenges
During the COVID-19 period, a significant number of students faced challenges due to the lack of online learning facilities. Limited access to the internet and technological devices (like mobile phones, televisions, and laptops) became major obstacles. Students in areas without internet connectivity struggled immensely to participate in or understand classes fully.
This digital divide left many students without access to mobile phones and televisions, creating a severe learning crisis. To address this, several individuals, organizations, and institutions stepped forward, donating devices and resources to these students. Additionally, the Department of Education formed a public committee to identify students without access to online learning facilities. Together, these efforts helped to mitigate the impact of these challenges to some extent.
Online Classes and Augmented Reality
Government Welfare LP School in Valakode , Kollam, tried a unique approach to online education by incorporating augmented reality (AR), which allowed students to experience virtual objects and animals as if they were physically present. Teacher Sam Thomas implemented this technology, creating AR-based video lessons that captured students’ interest in online classes. This innovative approach sparked curiosity about modern technology and marked a step forward in education, drawing significant media and public attention.
Other States Following Kerala’s Model
The online education method implemented by Kerala became a model for other states. Initially, states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Punjab followed this Kerala model. As more states adopted it, online education gained popularity across the country.

During the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns, online education played a vital role in sustaining the education sector. When students feared for their academic future, online classes emerged as a solution, with everyone recognizing their importance.
